How Dating Sims Work
A dating sim is, at its core, a game you clear. Each character has a pre-written route. Stack up affection through the right choices, and you arrive at that route's ending.
What makes a well-crafted dating sim compelling — and eventually limiting — is the same thing: every line of dialogue, every branch, was written by a person in advance. By the second playthrough, you already know the road.
What's Left Without Routes
When AI writes the story in real time, the concept of a route disappears. There's no walkthrough that can exist. Say the same words in the same situation today and tomorrow, and the story flows differently.
There are no affection meters either. What there is instead is a relationship. What you said earlier, promises kept or broken, things you've gone through together — all of it accumulates into how the other character responds. It's less about raising a number and more about building something.
Choices work differently too. In a dating sim, a choice means picking from prepared branches. In an AI story, there are two choices — but you can also type what you actually want to do. Write "close the umbrella and get wet together" instead of "hold the umbrella over her," and the story receives that action and continues from it.
The Tradeoff
To be honest, AI can't fully replicate the density of a hand-crafted dating sim. A scene polished by a writer over months — that's the strength of pre-written narrative.
The strength of the AI approach is somewhere else: your setup, your characters, your variables, and the story responds to them. It's a trade between polish and freedom.
And for a relationship to accumulate, the AI has to remember what came before. The problem of settings getting lost in longer stories is something we cover separately in the AI memory piece. PLOT manages core events and relationships through summaries, so commitments made early in the story are still alive dozens of turns later.
