Apps like OOC — when you want a novel, not an anime

2026-10-19 · PLOT Team

Written by the PLOT team. We try to be fair to both kinds of app — they aren't really rivals, just different kinds of fun.

Where the search usually starts

OOC is the English-language edition from Wrtn, the company behind Crack in Korea and Kyarapu (キャラぷ) in Japan. It calls itself "The Playable Anime": you step into an anime-style story, with art and characters, and steer it with your own lines and actions.

People tend to start searching for "apps like OOC" at one of a few moments:

None of those mean something is wrong with the app. They usually mean you want a different shape of story.

Two different shapes

A playable anime starts from a scene. Someone has already drawn the world, the characters, the mood — and your input moves you around inside it. The pleasure is presence: being there, seeing it, reacting.

A novel that takes anything starts from you. Nothing is laid out in advance. You toss in a premise, a twist, a half-formed daydream, and the story absorbs it and keeps writing. The pleasure is watching an idea you had become a story you can read.

Neither one is the better version of the other. It's the difference between wanting a game you're inside and wanting your own story on the page.

The lane PLOT is in

If the second shape is what you're after, here's what PLOT is:

You're not exploring a world someone built. The world gets built while you read.
