Character.AI alternatives — start with what you liked there

TL;DR
  • As of October 30, 2026, Character.AI is still running. Its parent company filed for Chapter 11 on October 12 and expects a court-supervised sale to finish by late November or early December.
  • Whatever you decide, keep a copy first — Character.AI says you can export your data through the app or the website.
  • Liked the character → look at other character chat apps. Liked the story → interactive fiction, which is what PLOT is. Liked one particular series → official experiences or fan fiction; a story app can start from that kind of story, with characters of your own.

Facts about Character.AI checked October 30, 2026, from its official announcements. Written by the PLOT team — we make one of the apps mentioned below, and we say plainly where it doesn't fit.

On October 12, 2026, Character.AI's parent company filed for Chapter 11 to run a court-supervised sale. The company says the platform remains up, subscriptions remain active, and it expects the sale to finish by the end of November or early December 2026. Nothing has shut down.

If you're looking around anyway, the usual list of "top alternatives" doesn't help much. Character.AI was several things at once, and which app replaces it for you depends on which of those things you were there for.

First, keep a copy

Whatever you decide, export your data. Character.AI's own notice says you can do it through the app or the website, and you'll have your own copy however the sale turns out.

What did you actually come back for?

Think about the reason you kept opening the app. Here are three of the usual reasons.

1. A character — someone who answers back

You liked talking with someone. The voice, the personality, the way a conversation picked up where you left it. Maybe you spent time building a character exactly right, or you had one you returned to for months.

That is what character chat apps are built for, and it's the part a story app won't replace. If this is your answer, look at other character chat or companion apps. When you compare them, check the things that mattered to you on Character.AI:

PLOT is not this kind of app. In PLOT the AI writes a story; it doesn't talk with you as a companion. If a character was what you came for, this is where we'd honestly point you elsewhere.

2. A story — things happening

You liked what happened. The plot that grew out of the chat, the scenes, the twist you steered toward. Maybe your favorite characters were really narrators that ran a whole world rather than one person.

Then what you want is interactive fiction: the AI tells the story, and you decide where it goes. That's what PLOT is.

Character.AI has also added its own story modes — Stories (2025) and Books (2026). If you're staying, those are worth a look too.

3. A series you already loved

Character.AI's recent announcements have been about fandom, and some people were there for characters from an anime, a game, or a book they love.

The honest answer here is the least convenient one. No app can give you the official versions of characters someone else owns unless it has a license, so licensed, official experiences are the only place you'll find the "real" ones. Fan fiction communities are where people write those stories by hand.

What a story app can do is narrower. If what you loved was a kind of story — rivals forced to work together, a villainess who wakes up inside a novel, a crew that becomes a family — you can start from that, with characters you sketch yourself. PLOT doesn't include characters from anyone else's series.

A quick way to decide

You may have liked more than one of these. That's fine — nothing says you need a single app.

If you're moving a story, not a character

If you had a long story going and want to keep it going somewhere else, we wrote a separate, practical guide: Keeping a Character.AI story going somewhere else.
