You're mid-story. You told the AI your character can't use magic. Three turns later — she's casting a spell. Or a name you established in scene one gets changed by scene four.
The AI isn't malfunctioning. It's working exactly as designed — just designed for something other than long stories.
What is a context window?
AI processes everything inside a "visible window." That window is called the context window.
Whatever is inside the window, the AI can reference. Whatever falls outside it — gone. No access.
Short conversations stay entirely inside the window. As the conversation grows longer, earlier content gets pushed out. When your setup from scene one gets pushed out, the AI simply can't see it anymore.
Why longer stories make this worse
At fifty turns, one hundred turns — the world-building, relationships, and rules you established early are long out of the window. The AI is writing the next scene from the last few exchanges only.
This is the core reason settings disappear in long AI roleplay and chat-style story apps.
How apps can be designed differently
One approach is summarization. Instead of relying on raw conversation history, the app compresses key information — characters, events, rules — and feeds it back to the AI every turn.
PLOT manages summaries of your story as it unfolds, so the AI can reference early setup even deep into a long narrative. This doesn't make the context limit disappear. All AI systems have one. But it means the story doesn't start from a blank slate every few scenes.
